UNIVERSITY POLICE

The SDSU University Police Department is made up of 29 sworn officers and 50 civilian support staff. All officers have completed the California Police Officers Standards Training Academy and have statewide law enforcement authority. The officers serve the campus community 24-hours a day.

The department is divided into three divisions: Administrative Services, Field Operations and Auxiliary Services. The Administrative Services Division handles crime prevention programs, records, property and evidence, emergency preparedness, communications and investigations.

Auxiliary Services include parking, access control, bike licensing, carpool program, community service officers, defensive driving, Live Scan fingerprinting, security escorts and special events.

Field Operations includes the Patrol and Bike Team units, Critical Response Unit, Special Operations, K9 unit, and Traffic Enforcement. Most sworn officers are assigned to Patrol, providing patrol services to the campus community. Officers respond to calls for service for things like traffic collisions, disturbances, crime reports, and inspecting suspicious persons and vehicles.

The officers maintain a visible presence on campus and the streets in order to enforce traffic regulations.

There are five bike patrol officers and one sergeant. Bike patrol helps make officers more visible and readily available to the community. Officers on bicycle can access areas that patrol cars cannot.

The Special Operations Unit is used to identify and address serious or chronic crime issues that impact the campus community. The unit aggressively combats quality of life issues through the use of creative crime fighting strategies aimed at long-term solutions.

The SOU took part in Operation Sudden Fall back in 2008 which resulted in the largest college drug bust in U.S. history, with 96 arrests, 75 of whom were students.

The SDSU K9 unit enhances the effectiveness of police officers in searching for and apprehending violent criminals, as well as locating evidence, narcotics, and explosive devices.

The University offers a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program which uses realistic self-defense techniques for women. Women are taught about awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance before moving on to the hands-on self defense training.

All female students, faculty and staff are encouraged to take part in this program.

ARREST ON SDSU CAMPUS

When someone is arrested on the SDSU campus, men will be take to the Men's Central Jail in downtown San Diego and women will be take to Las Colinas jail for booking. This process will include fingerprinting, photographs, a background check and warrant search. Depending on how many people are being brought in to the jail, it could take several hours to complete the booking process.

They will also be searched for drugs or contraband, and any personal property and money will be collected and held until they are released. A bail amount will be set according to the county bail schedule and once booking is complete, they will be able to either post cash bail or have a bail bondsman post a bond for them.
