San Juan Capistrano’s police services have been contracted from the Orange County Sheriff's Department since 1961. Deputies here work hard to protect lives and safeguard property. To that end, they have developed several successful investigative and crime prevention programs.

They are also committed to promptly responding to calls for service, to protect lives and safeguard property, to initiate and maintain crime prevention programs, and to apprehend criminal offenders.

A program they are vigorously pursuing is one that entails cracking down on DUIs. The Office of Traffic Safety, California Highway Patrol, and San Juan Capistrano law enforcement want everyone in this area to drive safely and responsibly.

The SJCPD also supports Alert OC, which is a mass notification system designed to keep San Juan Capistrano residents and businesses informed about emergencies.

By registering with Alert OC, time-sensitive voice messages from the City may be sent to your home, cell or business phone. Text messages are also sent to cell phones, e-mails and hearing-impaired receiving devices.

The city’s animal control services are also provided through an agreement with Orange County Animal Care Services (OCACS). Under the direction of the County Health Department, OCACS conducts patrols, rescues injured animals, stops cruelty and investigates bite reports.

The City of San Juan Capistrano maintains a comprehensive Emergency Management Program, too. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) and Associated Senior Action Program (ASAP) all pitch in during times of trouble.

Recently, the San Juan Capistrano police began using automated traffic light enforcement as a way to reduce the amount of injuries sustained in broadside collisions at intersections. The city currently has two intersections where photos of violators who run red lights are taken: Ortega Highway at Del Obispo, and Del Obispo at Camino Capistrano.

Those arrested by the San Juan Capistrano Station officers will be taken to the Orange County Jail.

Release from an Orange County Jail can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending upon how busy the jail staff is at the time.

San Juan Capistrano began when Father Junipero Serra founded what is now known as the "Jewel of the Missions" back in 1776. It was from that Spanish Catholic outpost, which remains a major tourist draw, that San Juan eventually developed into a city.
