The City of Fountain Valley is situated in the heart of Orange County, just minutes from Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm and the beach. It became a city in 1957, and throughout its rich history, it has been known as "A Nice Place to Live."

Residents adopted this motto because they are proud of their pristine streets, 18 parks, wide range of recreation programs and sunny climate.  One of the City's greatest assets is Mile Square Park which encompasses 640 acres of land.  Fountain Valley also owns and operates a 78-acre Recreation Center and Sports Park that includes an indoor gym, racket ball courts, community rooms, 15 ball fields, 3 dedicated softball fields, a walking trail and playground.

It is the site of many great community events like the Annual Egg Hunt, Concerts in the Park, the Classic Car Show and Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The Fountain Valley Police Department is a law enforcement agency that is praised in the city for their strong teamwork and partnership with the community.  This partnership forms the foundation of their Community Oriented Policing philosophy.

The Patrol Division is called "the backbone of the Police Department."  Officers patrol the streets of Fountain Valley 24/7 in black and white Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor vehicles. They are the first responders to public calls for service. The police here also seek out and proactively suppress criminal activity, enforce traffic laws, attend Neighborhood Watch and Business Coalition meetings, engage in community problem-solving activities and undergo continuous training. The Patrol Division has solved many serious crimes in Fountain Valley city, including homicides.

The FVPD also has a Traffic Bureau which is committed to promoting the safest and most efficient traffic flow possible. This bureau offers a bicycle safety class for youth offenders and their parents, and has donated 60 bicycle helmets to children who cannot afford them.  Several sobriety checkpoints are conducted throughout the year to emphasize their community-wide intolerance of intoxicated drivers. The Traffic Bureau consists of one sergeant, four motor officers, and a traffic collision investigator.

The FVPD Detective Bureau provides follow-up investigations on all criminal activities except narcotics and gangs. A Detective Lieutenant oversees a Detective Sergeant, 5 full-time Investigators, a civilian Court Liaison, a civilian Crime Analyst, and a Secretary. Each Investigator handles a specific assignment, such as crimes against persons, juvenile and sexual assaults, fraud/forgery and checks, residential and commercial burglaries, car theft and miscellaneous crimes.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the FVPD is comprised of one sergeant and three investigators who are a sub-division of the Detective Bureau.  SIU is responsible for the investigation of all vice and narcotics, as well as all gang related crimes

The Identification Bureau processes crime related evidence.  Fingerprints, photographs, DNA and computer forensics are some of the methods they use.  FVPD also has a Records Bureau and a Dispatch Unit that fields over 20,000 911 calls every year.  Other specialized units include a SWAT Team, Canine Team and a Crisis Negotiation Team.
