    The Aliso Viejo Police Department is actually Police Services provided on a contract basis by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for a resident population of 45,000 people.  In addition to the city’s chief of police, their law enforcement staff consists of one lieutenant, three sergeants,19 patrol/traffic deputies,  two investigators, two community services officers, a crime prevention specialist, a shared emergency management program coordinator, and several other support services.

    Thanks to its connection with the OC Sheriffs, the city benefits from a Special Enforcement Team of two patrol deputy sheriffs.  Aliso Viejo has yet another deputy who is assigned to the Regional Directed Enforcement Team, which is a surveillance team that handles local investigations.

    Officers patrol the city 24 hours a day, engaged in narcotics prevention, special investigations, and the general enforcement of laws.  Their Traffic Safety Unit conduct routine traffic patrols that to encourage motorists and pedestrians to comply with traffic laws and they issue citations and/or warnings to violators. Traffic accidents are investigated and their circumstances recorded and analyzed. This division even includes contract services for crossing guards.

    OCSD Police Services are supported by a volunteer group called the Police Assistance Liaison Service, or PALS.  The citizens who make up this group assist deputies in a variety of non-critical services like Neighborhood, Business and Park Watch, special school and community events.  They even monitor empty vacation homes. Aditionally, a Crime Prevention Specialist who oversees Community Oriented Police programs like Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Child safety programs, including bicycle rodeos, Walk to School Day events, and fingerprinting.

    The city has an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP): emergency organization and emergency operations plan. It is used by the government and the OC Sheriff’s Department in Aliso Viejo to respond to emergencies.
