The Napa Police Department is responsible for law enforcement, crime prevention and traffic safety within the Napa city limits.  The department objectives include responding in a timely manner to concerns and priorities of the community. The Police Department is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and closed on holidays.

The Napa PD is known as one of the oldest Police Departments in the entire state of California. It was established in 1875, just three years after the town was incorporated and 25 years after California became a state. The Department is organized within 6 bureaus which are, Administration, Patrol, Crime Prevention/Youth Services, Investigations, and Central Dispatch. Each bureau has a Police Commander in charge of its operation.

Those arrested by Napa County courts, the Sheriff’s department, the California Highway Patrol, as well as the American Canyon and Yountville police departments will be transported to the Napa County Jail. The jail can house 256 inmates. We can post a bond at this facility once the defendant has been cleared for bail.

The Napa Police Department has no oversight authority or responsibility for jail operations or for prisoners in the jail. The county jail in Napa is privately run by the Napa County Department of Corrections. It is not run by Sheriffs deputies or a Sheriff's Department. This is one of three county jails located in California which is not directly administrated by a Sheriff's Department.
