OCSD Deputy Gets Probation For Pepper Spray On Pizza
People have all sorts of odd affinities when it comes to pizza toppings, but a chemical that sets your mouth, stomach and intestines on fire generally isn't one of them.

Last summer, Orange County Sheriff's Department deputy Juan Tavera chose to douse a teenager's pizza with pepper spray during a routine traffic stop.  The pie was in the back seat of the car when the event took place, the victim said, and it wasn't until he got home, dug in and his mouth started burning that he realized something was wrong.

The teen …

State Greenlights $80M Grant For Musick Jail Expansion

There are a lot of people who don't want to see an expansion at the Musick Jail.   A California state board, however, is not among them.

As of late last week, they'd approved an $80 million construction grant, which will be used to add bed space, create therapy rooms and focus on rehabilitation efforts.   Classroom space and additional dorms will also be built.

The city of Irvine has been trying to block construction for as long as its been talked about.  They've taken a "not in my backyard", approach, saying that adding medium and maximum security inmates to the jail is …

United Way’s Donations Policy Backfires During The Giving Time Of Year

United Way’s Donations Policy Backfires During The Giving Time Of Year

The holiday season is typically a giving time of year, but a flawed United Way donations policy that re-routed funds that should have been earmarked for the OC Sheriff's Department Advisory Council into their general pool has caused a massive uproar.

The Sheriff's Department Advisory Council provides funds for causes that aren't supported by the OCSD budget; families of officers who have been injured or killed in the line of duty are the most frequent beneficiaries.

Until recently, more than 1,000 members of the department had set up auto-deductions from their paychecks.  In theory, the monies should have gone to support …

Musick Jail Expansion Proponents Still Duking It Out With Irvine

Musick Jail Expansion Proponents Still Duking It Out With Irvine

When it comes to getting an approval for expansion of the James A. Musick Jail, both sides are coming at it gloves off.  The city of Irvine, however, has been knocked out in the latest round.

Elected officials were hoping their appeal to the Fourth District Court would quash the project, arguing it should have been reviewed under the California Environmental Quality Act.   The justices disagreed and have said at this point, Orange County has merely applied for state funding.  Construction, they said, is not yet moving forward.

Irvinians have long disputed the need to add bed space to the minimum …

OCSD Deputies Get Call From Escort Who Got Stiffed, Say Man Torched Wife's Clothes After Getting Burned
The Orange County Sheriff's Department has had a few busy days on their hands.

First, they say a Rancho Santa Margarita man had taken a rather interesting approach to dealing with a marital spat.

The couple apparently got into a heated argument last weekend after enjoying a few too many adult beverages, and after the husband decided to smoke some pot.

Booze reportedly fueled arguments rarely end well, and this one is believed to have landed the man in jail.

It all started after the pair got …

OCSD Captain Proud Of Her Latina Roots

As it stands, Orange County Sheriff's Department Cmdr. Linda Solorza is the second highest ranking woman in the entire department.

Solorza said that despite her professional success she has never forgotten who she is and where she came from.  Her grandparents came to the US many years ago from Mexico, she said, and she is very proud of her Latina roots.

When her mom graduated from high school, she said, she was the first Hispanic homecoming queen the small town ever had.  Back then, small towns in rural Kansas weren't as progressive as they are today, there were places she was …

Supervisors Approve Musick Jail Expansion

Phase two of the James A. Musick Jail expansion project has been officially green lighted by the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

A first expansion at the Irvine facility was approved last December, and at that time, the board had allocated $100 million in state grant monies to fund construction that would ultimately add 512 beds.

The OC Sheriff's Department has confirmed that the design for phase one is already underway.

Now, the county is waiting to hear back from Sacramento to learn whether $80 million of that grant can be reallocated to fund what they describe as being phase two. Phase …

Inmates At Orange County Jails Help To Train Abandoned Dogs

Each hear, thousands of dogs throughout the country are abandoned by their owners.

Those with sweet temperaments are frequently adopted.

At the same time, not all owners train their pets to have appropriate manners.

A spokesperson for the Orange County jails said they have partnered with a local nonprofit and together, they are working with shelters to help train abandoned dogs.

The results seem to speak for themselves.   The inmates spend about eight weeks with their furry friends and teach them basic commands like sit, speak, shake and roll over.  It's a win for the dogs, because this makes them more adoptable.

It's also …

Orange County Hopes To Expand Musick Jail

Sources within the Orange County Sheriff's Department have confirmed the department is requesting state funding which would be earmarked to expand the Musick Jail.

If everything goes a planned, the county could receive up to $80 million dollars.  This isn't to say that the facility is ready to break ground on a new wing.  There is a lot that still needs to be worked out.

For example, Sheriff's Department staff members still need to meet with the Irvine City Council to go over their plans to seek an additional state funding.

A total of $500 million is available, and the biggest pieces …

Costa Mesa PD Hires New Officer

A representative from within the Costa Mesa Police Department has confirmed they have hired Justin Mahaffey as its newest officer.

Records indicate Mahaffey has just completed six months of training at the Orange County Sheriff's Department academy.  The new hire had first started working for the Costa Mesa PD in April 2012.  At that time he had been employed as a jail custody officer.

Department officials felt he had a lot of potential, and decided to send him to the academy.  Records show he began as a recruit during the first week of March.
