The Banning Jail, called Smith Correctional Facility, has an interesting history.  During the 1920’s, the jail was being used by “prison road gangs” that were in charge of highway construction.   During the Second World War, the jail was used as a Japanese Internment Camp.  When the war was over, the jail went back to being utilized for “prison road gangs”.
