A Florida-based police officer has been honored for saving lives.  The 25 year-old public servant went above and beyond the call of duty, according to local firefighters, when he helped rescue people from a burning home.

This is why the Professional Firefighters Association chose to honor Jacksonville police officer James Lozano with a special award.

The incident took place in mid-June.  It was during that time that Lozano responded to a call about a structure fire on Rusk Street.  The officer was among the first to arrive on the scene.

A Spanish-speaking couple was outside of the burning home.  They were frantically calling for help. Lozano, who speaks Spanish was able to determine two others were trapped inside.  That is when he entered fire-rescue mode.

A Good Samaritan had indicated a desire to enter the residence, but the officer took charge and said no.

He chose to go in himself.  Officer Lozano ran into the burning building and crawled down the front hallway.  He found one of the trapped residents asleep in a front bedroom.  They helped direct the policeman to a second person who was sleeping in a different part of the house.  That person was quickly located.

The trio was able to escape from a window. Medical personnel said they were shocked that no one sustained any injuries.  Firefighting teams arrived to the house shortly after the rescue.  The blaze was extinguished within 15 minutes.  It is believed the fire started as a result of faulty electrical components.

Additional information will reportedly be released in the future.

The firefighters said that very few other policemen would have responded in the same manner. It is not every day that you see an officer run into a burning building to save lives.

Lozano never thought twice about his actions, and two people are still alive because of his choice.  This is why local leaders have honored him for this decision.
