Patrol Services for the San Luis Obispo Police Department offer the community 24-hour emergency and non-emergency response and service. This also includes Field Training Officers, Downtown Officers, Crime Scene Investigators, SWAT, etc.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is divided into two bureaus; the Operations Bureau and the Administrative Services Bureau. A Police Captain commands each bureau.

Police dispatchers are responsible for dispatching fire department personnel and applying emergency medical dispatch techniques. San Luis Obispo P.D. Communications dispatchers receive incoming telephone calls for service, including 911 calls.

The Traffic Safety Unit provides its citizens motorcycle assignments and special traffic enforcement. The unit is responsible for enforcing traffic laws, investigating traffic collisions, and other traffic safety duties.

The Neighborhood Services Manager of the Department coordinates the response of City departments to neighborhood issues. This includes, SNAP, Neighborhood Enhancement Ordinance enforcement, Crime Prevention, Working to Improve Neighborhoods (WIN), and various other programs.

The Investigative Division of the Department is supervised by a Lieutenant and includes two detectives working property crimes, etc. This also includes a School Resource Officer and the “D.A.R.E.” officer. Additionally, one detective is assigned to the county-wide Narcotics Task Force unit.
