SAN MATEO SHERIFF & WOMEN'S JAIL INFORMATION

When arrested in San Mateo or the surrounding areas, female defendants may be transported to the San Mateo County Jail, also known as the Maguire Correctional Facility or they may be taken directly to the San Mateo County Women's Correctional Center. Both are run by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department and service the entire county. Both jails are also significantly overcrowded. San Mateo has been working toward finding a site and funding for new facilities. The County's website offers extensive information about the plans.

Either of these jails can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours to book a new arrestee. If they are not bailed out or released while there, they will then be transported to the Women's Correctional Center Jail in San Mateo County located at 1590 Maple Street in Redwood City. Once transported, they will be interviewed, fingerprinted, and booked into the jail computer system. After they have completed processing, arrestees may be bailed out 24-hours a day. Feel free to read more about arrest and booking procedures.

Release from the San Mateo County Jail or San Mateo Women’s Correctional Center Jail can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours once a bail bond has been posted. If the defendant is not bailed out, she will generally remain in custody until the matter has been resolved in court. Find out more about jail release options.
