San Mateo is the thirteenth-largest county in California, covering 741 square miles between San Francisco, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties.

The men and women of the San Mateo Sheriff's Department are committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens and visitors. They are compassionate about victims of crimes and natural disasters, as well as San Mateo's juvenile citizens. Over 650 personnel members work as a team to better serve their community.

The Department is composed of several different sub-departments, including patrol, investigations, community policing, SWAT, forensic crime lab, and overseeing the Maguire Correctional Facility.

Sheriff's deputies provide law enforcement services to more than 70% of San Mateo County, with direct jurisdiction over the county's unincorporated areas. Their services are contracted with the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain) and San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans).

The Department provides investigative services for the San Francisco International Airport.
The Sheriff's Department is also contracted to provide law enforcement services for the cities of Woodside, Portola Valley, San Carlos, and Eichler Highlands.

The Department's Patrol Bureau keeps communities safe through enforcement, prevention, education and community policing by working with communities, government entities and schools. The Headquarters Patrol serves the Bayside areas while the Coastside Patrol serves the coastal beat areas. The Bureau provides general services to the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County.

The Investigations Division gives thorough and effective investigative services to the public and San Mateo criminal justice agencies to aid in promoting safer communities and to build a foundation for investigation and successful prosecution of criminals.

San Mateo's Sheriff's Office works alongside the judicial system in order to provide safe and secure facilities at the San Mateo County Jails for adult inmates as well as positive inmate programs to help reduce the recidivism rate and improve the quality of life for those they serve.

Inmates are housed in such a way that provides for their medical, nutritional, hygienic, legal and spiritual needs.
