    CALAVERAS COUNTY JAIL

    Calaveras County Jail

The Calaveras County Jail facility was built in 1963 and was designed to house 45 male inmates, 4 female inmates and 10 juvenile inmates. Even though there were housing units for women, they were usually taken to the Amador County Jail.

From the time the jail opened until 1980, sworn deputies would rotate their time between jail and patrol duties, and would also work in the 911/dispatch center until a new dispatch unit was added. In 1980, trained correctional officers took over jail duties.

Despite expansions over the years, the Calaveras County Jail still faces serious overcrowding. Plans have been in the works for a new jail, but because of budget cuts funds for a project like this have not been available.

Located in central California, in the area known as Gold Country, Calaveras County is home to more than 45,000 residents. The only incorporated city in the county is Angels Camp. The Calaveras Big Trees State Park preserves some of the state's Giant Sequoias.

With so much of the 1,036 square mile county being unincorporated, the responsibility of law enforcement services falls on the Calaveras County Sheriff. It is the mission of the department to provide competent and effective public safety services to everyone with efficient, professional and ethical law enforcement and crime prevention practices.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department has taken the approach of Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving. They focus on developing partnerships between the department and community members in order to better address the causes of crime and fear along with other community issues.

The responsibilities of the Sheriff's Deputies include preserving the peace and preventing crime, investigating public offenses that have been committed, and arresting people who attempt or commit public offenses. The Sheriff's officers also attend court and act as the court crier and take control of the County Jail and the prisoners housed within.
