The City of Bishop's Police Department can trace its roots way back to 1903. However, these days it currently employs 14 sworn officers, 5 dispatchers, 5 crossing guards, 5 reserve officers and a support staff of 4.

The Bishop Police Department staff work in partnership with the community to protect lives, property and the quality of life and providing high quality service to their residents and businesses. This success is measured by Bishop’s extremely low crime rate.

Bishop’s police officers have strong personal values, a powerful work ethic and a passion for public safety. They work closely with business owners, public employees, and the community at large to stop crime before it takes root.  Front-line officers are led by supervisors who use both positive leadership and personal involvement to achieve premier public service.

Since there is only a temporary holding facility at the Bishop Police Station, arrestees in the Bishop area will be transferred to the Inyo County jail (located in Independence) for booking and processing into the system.

Inmates booked into the Inyo County jail are all eligible to be released on bail or bond, unless specified by a warrant, court order or bail schedule. The booking process in the Inyo County Jail may include, fingerprints, photographs, also known as (mug shots), and a background check of their records.

The booking time of the defendant will typically take from 2 to 4 hours. It’s important to know that we cannot post a bond until the defendant is completely booked into the system. However, when the defendant is clear, we can post a bail bond at the jail 24 hours a day. Release times from the Inyo jail can vary from 1-2 hours.

If you have any questions about someone taken into custody by the Bishop Police Department, call 888 Bail Bond 24 hours a day at toll-free 888-224-5266.
