Burglaries, Robberies And A Pot-Laced Cookie Incident

San Mateo County law enforcement has been called out to investigate a number of colorful crimes in the past few weeks.  Below are just a few examples of the calls that have come in.

Menlo Park Police said that they were recently called out to talk to a 24 year-old female who had her shoes stolen while she was walking across a pedestrian bridge.  He cell phone was also stolen during the attack.  The suspect said the man tried to remove her pants, but he ran off when she fought back.  The suspect is still at large.

A few days later, …

Menlo Park Burglar Wanted For Grand Theft Box

It was the best of crimes, it was the worst of crimes...

Menlo Park Police say they're looking for a burglar who pulled off a rather anti climactic heist.  It all started several days ago when an unknown man broke into a local BevMo.

From there, he made a fast line to a box that (in theory) should have contained a $1,900 bottle of whiskey.  But it would seem the would-be thief was outsmarted by the store's manager, who had previously stashed the bottle in a safe,  locked area of the retail establishment.

The burglar did get away with the box, and …

Maguire Jail May Start Shipping Inmates To Alameda County

Last week, Sheriff Greg Munks requested the Board of Supervisors consider a request that would allow him to ship overflow inmates one county over.

The bid received unanimous approval; the two-year contract could be worth up to $3 million for Alameda County.

The contract is basically a "CYA" for the Maguire Jail.  As it stands, San Mateo detention facilities aren't overcrowded and the sheriff doesn't see that changing in the near future.

Essentially, it's an insurance policy; a "just in case" measure that would allow inmates at the Maguire Jail to be sent to Dublin in the case of unforeseen circumstances.

That could …

Need to recover stolen property? Keep your kids off drugs? There’s an app for that

It’s been no great secret that law enforcement agencies throughout the US have been turning to social media websites to help solve crime.  At this point, nearly everyone has heard at least one story about “selfie incrimination”, where a criminal has posted a photo of their unlawful exploits, only to have police come knocking at their door hours later.

You can find just about everything on social media websites these days, from crime photos, to pizza parlors and bail bond agents.

Members of the Redwood City Police Department have decided to take that one step further.  In recent weeks they've started …

Crime Spree Defendants Being Held On $500k Bail

A 24-year old woman and her spouse were booked into the Maguire Jail last week after a five-month investigation showed they were involved in a months-long crime spree.
Ashley Kirk and her husband were  reportedly arrested in Discovery Bay, according to court records, although this is not their first brush with the law.   The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department said they were initially picked up last fall for possession of stolen property.

Law enforcement officials believe the crime spree started as a result of Kirk's employment as a dog boarder.  Kirk may have collected personal data from pet owners, they said, …

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department has recently set up a webcam which allows anyone with an Internet connection to watch it live from the web.   Deputies have said this provides an unparallelled view of the $165 million project, and the stream is available 24-7.

The Maple Street Correctional Center is still two years out from opening its doors, although corrections officials say they look forward to having the extra space to house and rehabilitate offenders.  …

San Mateo Police Arrest McDonalds Manager Who Robbed His Store

A spokesperson for the San Mateo Police Department has confirmed that officers have arrested Felix Becerra, a 42 year-old McDonalds manager who robbed his own store.

Becerra is also believed to have held up another San Mateo restaurant at gunpoint during that same week.

Officers said they captured the suspect after San Mateo Police followed a vehicle that had been linked to an armed robbery at a local McDonalds.

It was later learned that this same vehicle was linked to a second robbery, this one taking place at the franchise location in Alameda County that employed him.  Officers said that Becerra climbed …

Martinez Jail Inmate Hunger Strike Participants Win Demands

Inmate hunger strike participants at the Martinez Jail have won their demands.  Many of these inmates had opted to participate in the statewide hunger strike that was initiated early last month.

That strike was put together by a group of Pelican Bay prisoners who felt that placing suspected gang members in solitary confinement for indefinite periods of time was inhumane.

Martinez Jail inmates quickly hopped on board.  They also put together their own list of demands.

The first was that the corrections department cease the Administrative Segregation housing program.  They felt that (more…)

Cost Of New San Mateo Jail Could Double If Municipal Bonds Are Needed

A representative close to the new San Mateo jail project said the cost to build the Maple Street Correctional Center could be much greater than initially believed.

The added fees would come if the county needs to issue municipal bonds in order to make up gaps in financing.  San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks said that the worst-case situation would have the county issuing bonds to cover full constructions costs.  The best case would involve them issuing bonds to pay for half.

Revenue bonds, such as the ones that are being proposed, do not need voter approval.

Munks said the county is …

Name For New Redwood City Jail

A representative for the Redwood City jail project has confirmed the County Board of Supervisors has almost locked down a name.

Construction on the facility began in July 2012.  The facility is expected to reach completion during the middle part of 2015.  Sources close to the project say it will cost about $160 million and will be about 260,000 square feet in size.

In addition, the new jail will have a rated capacity of 640 beds.  The supervisors previously said they were happy that the county and Redwood City were (more…)
