Lawsuit Prompts Sheriff’s Department To Break-Up With Facebook

The San Diego Sheriff's Department has seemingly kissed its Facebook page good bye after an Oceanside gun parts dealer filed a lawsuit against the agency in the Southern District federal court.

Sources close to the case says it all started with a couple, less-than-flattering comments about Sheriff Bill Gore; the plaintiff said not only were his remarks deleted, the department banned him from posting anything else on their Facebook wall.

His attorney has alleged that both these actions have violated his client's right to free speech.  Their argument is simple-  social media platforms are the new "town hall meetings".   All citizens …

Mayor Just Says ‘No’ To Jail Expansion

Although some groups are pushing for a renovation and expansion of the Tehama County Jail, at least one elected official is speaking out against it.

Proponents say that additional bed space is needed, especially after the state implemented it's prisoner realignment program, which has shifted certain sentenced offenders from serving time in state prisons to county lock-ups.

They say the extra 34,360 square feet and 64 beds are needed to accommodate the needs of people who are serving longer sentences, as it will allow space for rehabilitation and educational programs.

The main point of contention, according to the local mayor, is that …

US Incarceration Remains Staggering

Despite recent good news about lower crime rates, drop in major crime in Orange County, and new California laws reducing sentencing, the United States continues to incarcerate more prisoners than any other country.

State prisons vastly outpace Federal Prisons.

Drug offenses take the lead in convicted prisoners. Is it possible that moves to legalize marijuana or simply not arrest on small amounts will make a difference?

Perhaps, but take a look at this US Incarceration infographic: (more…)

Orange County Cities See Major Drop In Violent Crime

Sources within the Orange County law enforcement community have confirmed that yes, violent crime rates throughout the region are down year-on-year.

The dip in some regions has been so significant that some cities are describing it as being "dramatic".

Nearly every area in the county has reported declines, according to a recent FBI report.  Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said this can be largely attributed to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies working hand-in-hand.

With everyone working together, and using available technology, amazing things have happened.

Jail officials say that the drop in crime rates has helped them avoid releasing inmates early.  …

Retaining San Diego’s Finest Will Cost Dollars & Makes Sense

Upward of 300 officers have left the SDPD in the past 9 years
A recent editorial in America's Finest City's seems to have pointed out the obvious:  San Diego Police Department officers are not only underpaid, they're among the least paid in the state.

Recruiting and training efforts have done little to help.  At best, according to sources, the only thing it has accomplished involves maintaining the rate of spin on the staffing-revolving-door.

Bring new in officers, providing trained, while qualified and experienced employees run for the hills after getting offers for positions with better hours, pay and compensation packages.

Upward of 300 …

Hot Air Balloon Ride Lands Sisters In Jail

Two female tourists found themselves taking an unintended to the big house this week, although neither one was taken into custody.

Authorities say the incident started off when the pair, who was on holiday, decided to take a hot air balloon ride.  The operator wound up losing control of it a short time later, citing high winds and unstable air conditions.

Ultimately, he needed to make an unintended landing; no one suspected that would happen on grounds of the Amjer jail.  Neither woman had any idea where they were once the balloon touched ground, but the second the alarms and sirens …

Undercover: Covert LAPD OP investigates officers

Sources within the LAPD have confirmed the existence of video footage that confirms that a program designed to help identify corrupt officers.

Members of the Special Operations Division say it's all about weeding out "the bad apples".   Officers who willfully do wrong while wearing the badge leave a stain on the entire department, they said, which is why the SOD works hard to investigate allegations of officer misconduct.

Those who perform the investigations say it definitely takes a toll; they can't share the details of the operations with anyone, especially since that could compromise the safety of department personnel.   They also …

How Ballot Question 1 Could Change Bail Law

Voters in New Jersey today will be voting on a proposed constitutional amendment that, if approved, could fundamentally change how the state's bail bonds system works.

Ballot Question 1 proposes to alter the state Constitution to allow judges to implement no-bail holds on suspected violent offenders.  This means defendants who have been accused of heinous, serious crimes such as murder, homicide and others, can be denied bail.

Proponents point out that if the measure is passed, it will also pave the road for a second big change; namely, allowing judges the discretion to release certain, low-level offenders on their own recognizance.  …
